cycling heaven!

Switzerland as far as I'm concerned does not exist! apparently i got on a "swiss air" plane (also doesnt exist) and was connected to some suspended animation brain fooling machine. It then programmed me to an entire country where the roads are as smooth as a new driveway and many are dedicated just to cyclists. In fact one barely needs a map there are so many signs! the cars are aware and respectful of us. the scenery will rattle your skull. The descents are as dramatic and difficult as the ascents. The women in zurich and lucerne are all "the prettiest girl i've ever seen." And the food/coffee/beer/wine no matter what the price are amazing!

the only reason i know im not in this brain thefting device which has usurped my mind and left me drooling in a chair somewhere is because the hot tub with gorgeous zurichans, beer and warm food is not there at the end of every day. instead i am sleeping in old (unused) army surplus body bag liners.

Italy you have a tough act to follow!

i luv switzerland!

this is the most insanely beautiful and bike friendly place ever!!!!!!!!
wifi is always locked here. hard to poach it and all the restaurants are fucking expensive! in italian part of swiss in faido omw to biasca. a girl lent me two large ortlieb panniers that i couchsurfed with in lucerne. biking here is insanely easy. everything is marked really well for bikes and the bike routes go everywhere! perfect for an unprepared idiota like me, haha! no time now, have to get back on the bike! everything is working fine. glad i got new brake pads!! the bike is a little short though. hopefully a new stem will fix that though. otherwise i'll be in some pain for 4 months

first stop lucerne!

Bike route 262996 - powered by Bikemap

"I have a wife and a kid and a gun"

So the ridiculousness continues with minor hangups. Got to LAX and apparently the United person (first leg of the journey) did not check me in on both flights. So after running from the United terminal about a half mile to the international terminal I was told "you're too late." But somehow this team of filipinas got me on the plane and warned me that my bike would not make it.
Sure enough, after actually getting a great seat and sitting next to a sweet old swiss woman, I made it to zurich sans bicicletta! doh!

After speaking with the hottest lost baggage girl ever I was told that I could pick up if I called a phone number or they would deliver it probably that night. We were going to be out that night, so I said I'd pick it up tomorrow.

Getting to my couchsurfing (cs) house was somewhat easy...I realllllly had wanted to bike there though...it's like 75 degrees here! (or 20 deg C). It looks like a fairy tale over here. I've never seen so many beautiful women in my life. And I mean truly amazing looking...not that any would talk me and my giant scruffy, hungover, jet lagged, tired ass self!

So I met Ken, who is Irish and quite a great guy with a nice apartment, wifi and all that. We hit up the "Lokal" bar, where I promptly walked into the ladies room by accident. What? it was an emergency, i had to pee after all those tallboys!

Then it was on to see a guy from the UK named ironically enough "beardyman." Needless to say everyone thought I was him! So I enjoyed rock star status, a girl even dragged me on stage...where I proceeded to rile the crowd up properly...then get drug off by security. I'm sure that confused some people!

My cs host got so blasted that he stumbled home...very stumbly he told me later. So about 5am, with just a tshirt, totally cold and miserable i tried to climb into the windows of his second story apartment. I even had a backup plan and that guy ditched out on me cuz he was wasted! What's goin on with these people! haha...anyways, I buzzed his door soo long the neighbor below screamed from somewhere inside "gooo awayyyy!!!" So I did...then came right back a half hour later. Again, it's freezing out. So I tried climbing to the second story window. I accidentally rattled his windows on the way up and this is what he said "I have a wife, a kid and a gun! GO AWAY!" I figured him a bluffer, but the territorial/protection instinct can be quite strong...so even though I was almost in...I had to turn back...

After about 4 hours, riding trains, walking fast to stay warm...and actually seeing zurich at a very pretty time, but suffering still, I finally see ken strolling up to the sidewalk outside his apartment where i was sitting. Apparently we missed each other by like 20 minutes, and he doesn't remember squat. But he woke up on the couch and didn't know where I was so he went looking for me.

Then came the trek for chinese food (only thing open on good friday here), which was pricey and mediocre. Then the trek to the airport. no luck again! and their system was down so they couldn't look it up. They also said "yeah, it will be here same time as your flight yesterday for sure!!" So we took the train back to middle of town and found a field next to the river. Holy crap is Zurich pretty. The trees have a lighter/brighter coloring, almost like a little more yellow than the ones in the states. We passed out all afternoon...I hadn't slept at all at this point, so that was a welcome relief. Then I used a public toilet with strange buttons and the largest toilet bowl I've ever seen...we're talking almost 3 feet in diameter! Buttons all over the sides...pretty neat swiss engineering. and the whole thing was in probably a 400 year old little tiny building.

So my bike finally arrived via courier, I'm about to set it up. Looks like its probably in one piece, and hopefully I can a map and get going tomorrow!!! woohoo!

Heres some pics both pre and present europe...

hangovers, body bags, trail running shoes and Europe here we come!

So I've partied like a rockstar, done little planning, and now with Europe just 5 days away things are getting critical! Time to get to work!

I've figured out a few things though like what I'm bringing. I'm going super lightweight. Just my mission workshop backpack and my (friend Erik's) surly cross check bike. I still need to buy some trail runners (all around good shoes), and I've found a sweet, bright red pair, but I'm so reluctant to spend $110 on fucking shoes!! although my last pair lasted quite a long time and served me very well. ahhh maybe it's worth it.

so, where do body bags fit in? Well, I'll be using two army surplus body bag liners for my personal shelter if it rains. The actual body bag would have been perfect....if it were waterproof!
Now, why do I need two liners? Because these liners are sized for a person about 4'5" tall...With two of them I can juuuuuuust keep my feet dry.

As far as hangovers, well....I haven't seen y'all in a while, so I went a little overboard. Plus, when I have no place to stay I tend to hit Prost! and then try to find a couch to crash on. Problem is I get too ridiculous, then I just want to ride my bike, and then I end up passed out in my car...of course now I have my body bag liners! ($3.45 each!).

I have a basic route planned once I leave Italy, but still need to determine my route from zurich through the swiss alps and then through the Italian Alps to Chiavari. Kind of a big blank to fill in, but I have found some cycling routes and what not. Just not exactly where I want to go....but very beautiful routes!

I've got the car taken care of. A friend will take it on who needs a car. When she can pay me, she will, but for now I'm just making sure someone is driving it. I still need to store important papers and all that stuff, but I've had some offers for that too. My instruments are all being stored or used. I've given away the bulk of my clothes. I'll keep a small duffel for when I return, but thats it. Kind of exciting, but I also feel like maybe I should be putting all this energy into a business or a band or standup comedy. But who knows where this may lead. I may not come back! That's right, if I like I'm going to find out a way to stay...or bike my way to thailand or something.

With that I will sign off and see you all later! It's late and I need my rest!

used car salesman...

...albeit with a giant beard which probably doesn't help in gaining anyone's trust!
I need someone to help me pay for this while I'm gone. Drive it all you want, just pay for oil changes, and anything you break. It is fully insured though. She is in perfect shape mechanically. I'll get an oil change for her before I leave as well!

Here she is and she is beautiful!!

Look! She attracts gorgeous traveling girls!
She is fast like this car!
At home loaded with stuff in the desert!
The subie enjoys camping as well!

bikes, rain, cold, food carts and vodka!

ahhhh....welcome back to Portland...
It's cold as hell, rainy, I worked on bikes AND rode them to eat some "wiffies" at food cart. And we took down a fair quantity of Vodka of the Gods Trader Joe's vodka.

But yeah, it's friggin chilly here and I'm glad I'm headed someplace warmer in a week or so.

I'm daunted by my mountain of stuff to get rid of, and I may have to sell the car too...that would be a bummer though, so I'm trying to find someone else to take over payments essentially so I can have it when I get back.

I'm also excited to get a new camera and figure out what I'm bringing over to Europe. Apparently Dan has basically secured me a job for when I get there! Woohoo!

Most of my stuff has either found a home and I've got to go drop it off, but I'm sure a lot of it will end up at goodwill/dumpster, so if anyone wants to accompany me to the storage facility you're free to go through it!

Other than that, just sitting at the most super eco and techie friendly laundromat in Portland. It fucking texts you when your wash is done!

almost back...to pdx

So I just learned my ex was held at gunpoint in nicaragua and robbed...not cool. Apparently she and her "drunken australian boy" were robbed, gagged and had almost all their shit taken. I'm thinking, "so soon? we just split up." But I don't really know that, and honestly its none of my business and I'm just glad she's ok. Regardless...it's a double whammy of bad news for me and the song "Mr. Brightside" by the Killers pops into my head!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SrkeWsQZNyU

The good news is I slept in a BED last night! Somewhere near Roseburg. Leaving soon for pdx.

So I dug out someone's house for the last week or so...that dirt is taller than me and that wall is about 15-20 feet long.

Pictures do NOT do it justice! But this was probably the craziest and one of the prettiest roads I've ever been on.

I made everyone write all funny quotes on the fridge...which has given rise to a new saying: (which is preceded by copious amounts of laughter) "Put that on the Fridge!"
